MARTY BALIN: Home

Well, let’s see, I’ve been an airplane, a starship, and I’ve soloed many times. I’ve even astral projected once or twice. The sky’s no limit, so they say.
I’ve been singing ever since I can remember. My mother told me I whistled before I could talk. The first time she took me to church and I heard the choir, I asked to join right after the service. I was a boy soprano on high holidays with all the basses and sopranos. I got to sing holy Jesus as all the pomp and ceremony filed in with their fancy robes, glittering golden items and the chanting.
I knew show business was for me. I’d sing on street corners and bus stops. And on Christmas, I'd go by myself to the rich areas and sing Christmas carols and make a few dollars, or be invited in for food and drinks. I grew up in the projects and would sing with all the black folks and blues musicians, where I was always welcomed and accepted because of my singing. I was never self-conscious about it. I loved it, so whenever I got the chance I jumped right in. I was a folkie, a hippie, a rocker, and a dreamer whose dreams came true at times. “I sing the body electric” as Walt Whitman wrote, and I’m still turned on by a song and love to sing and want to forever…a gift. That’s what it is, and thank God for it.
